Coaches Corner - Matt Lazarus
Matt re-joined United Dragons after a brief spell away and it has been a pleasure welcoming him back and seeing him develop into one our lead coaches at the club.
Matt brings a fountain of knowledge to the United Dragons and I know our players and coaches all benefit from his insight, tactical and technical expertise. We caught up with Matt during the week to get to know him on a deeper level. Please see Matt’s detailed answers below!
1) Where did you grow up as a kid?
I was born and raised in North London.
2) Did you play for a grassroots team/academy? Were there plenty of opportunities?
I played for a grassroots team near my school in Hertfordshire when I was younger. I really enjoyed it and had a lot of fun there, unfortunately it doesn’t exist anymore though!
3) If you could have a super power what would it be?
I would have the ability to teleport, I hate the traffic in London! I would love to be able to go anywhere in the world with the click of my finger.
4) if you could play in any football stadium where would it be
As a Chelsea fan and season ticket holder, I would have to say Stamford Bridge, especially if it meant I was playing for Chelsea!
5) if you could play football in a 5aside team, who would make your dream team
This is always a tough question because there are so many incredible players and I can only choose 4… I would have to choose Messi and Ronaldo as my attacking options, purely because they are two of the greatest players to grace the game. I would then have Sergio Ramos as my defender as he is an absolute beast. I’d have Manuel Neuer as my GK because he could also double up as an outfield player!
6) Who is your football idol?
There were so many legends that I loved watching whilst I was growing up but in more recent times, then Drogba would be up there for what he has done for Chelsea. However, I think overall I would say Ronaldo. On top of his natural talent, his dedication and work rate are immense and he also does a lot off the pitch for charity and for his fans.
7) Do you have any 2021 sporting goals?
A lot of my goals focus on the players that I coach at UD and roles, so in 2021 I just want to watch each player enjoy themselves and develop as people and players. Personally, I don’t have any particular sporting goals but I just generally want to get fitter and healthier, especially after the last year we have had in lockdown.
8) What has been your proudest UD moment?
My proudest UD moment is actually coming back to the club at the start of the season. After spending a couple of away, I re-joined the team in May and I was proud to represent the Dragon’s again. It had grown, both in the number of players and coaches and I’m excited to see where innovative and exciting the club goes next.
9) Describe your coaching philosophy
My coaching philosophy mainly revolves around effort. Especially at a young age, players have different abilities and skill levels, however as long as the players are giving their all, then I am happy. It’s about enjoying the game, having fun but also working hard, showing passion and dedication for your team and doing the best you can do, regardless of age and ability.
10) Away from football, what hobbies do you take part in?
Well football takes up a lot of my time! If I am not coaching, playing or watching football, I will usually try to watch other sports, rugby or basketball, or enjoy binge-watching a series in the evenings. I also enjoy cooking up a good feast!
